Wetsuits are important when it comes to surfing. Water in the sea is generally cold and the grip provided by a wetsuit insures that the surfer is kept warm as well as providing optimum motility and resistance to water.

In warmer climes, surfers may done bikinis or a bikini top with a pair of boardies. This is more pleasant than a wetsuit in hot temperatures as a suit, especially a long, full-bodied wetsuit, could be suffocating in terms of temperature. The advantages of wearing loose clothing are easier maneuverability on the board.
